Heart and Mind, Blood and Nerves2025
From antidotes made out of venom itself, to modern bioprospectors searching for the next billion-dollar drug—snakes and their venom have been used as healing agents for millenia—and cause hundreds of thousands of human deaths each year. Since the beginning, our intertwined relationship with snakes has been marked by a quest for knowledge, whether it's the evolutionary theory that the avoidance of venomous snakes was instrumental in the development of human intelligence itself, or studies that show our fears and preconscious reactions to snakes are uniquely built into our very DNA. Recently, news outlets reported on the promising story of a snake-enthusiast who methodically allowed himself to be bitten by venomous snakes over 200 times in the hope that his own blood would create a universal anti-venom, but he is just one person in a long line who have sought invincibility to venoms through self-immunization. Whether these sacrifices and experiments lead to life-saving drugs or not, scientists all over the world look to the complexity and mystery of venom to unlock new understandings of medicine, immunology, physiology, and pharmacology. True to their many legends, snakes today can still be seen as guardians of ancient knowledge as well as yet-undiscovered secrets, and teach us things about who they and we are. Heart and Mind, Blood and Nerves considers the convergence of myth and medicine, storytelling and science, and caution and curiosity coiled around snakes.
“Guardian,” Cardboard house, homemade paper mache snake, plastic fruit, miniature garden hose, fake grass; “Library, Zoo, Collection,” pharmaceutical jars with labels describing approved drugs derived from snake venoms and areas of current venom-related research; collages using a variety of source materials including illustrations from Gustave Dore’s Bible and other stories, with quotes from a variety of sources inluding “Venomous: how earth's deadliest creatures mastered biochemistry” by Christie Wilcox, “Snake” by Drake Stutsman, and the New York Times. &#38;nbsp;

Noah’s Out-of-Order Ark-ade and Reliquary

Welcome to Noah’s Out-of-Order Ark-ade and Reliquary: a defunct arcade repurposed as a shrine for lost and revived animals. Part holy site, part roadside attraction, visitors can pay their respects, or indulge their morbid curiosity, with real(!) replicas of what remains of the saintly animal martyrs of the Anthropocene. Stemming from a lifelong appreciation of Catholic visual culture, this project continues previous projects’ exploration of the religious narratives surrounding species loss, de-extinction science, and cryogenic conservation. Noah’s Ark-ade offers strange, irreverent, and darkly humorous ways of coping with the absurdity of both the problem of extinction, and its possible solutions.

Hand-painted circus/sideshow banners on canvas, arcade game cabinets, crushed egg, stained glass illustration from a church window of St. Lawrence, fake chicken leg, inkjet print of a scene from Caspar David Friedrich’s painting The Sea of Ice, 1823-25, modified using AI, plastic animal prizes of candidates for conservation or de-extinction, stained glass illustration traced from a real stained glass window of Lazarus emerging from the tomb, cat toy, yarn, toy endangered Columbia Basin pygmy rabbits, plastic hawk, votive candles, 3D-printed thylacine skull, pigeon decoy, pigeon spikes, wax heart, curtains, lights.

Martha&#38;rsquo;s heart was left intact during her autopsy out of reverence for her status as the last passenger pigeon, and the Carolina Parakeet was the only parrot species native to the US. The last-known individuals of both species died at the Cincinnati Zoo in the 1910&#38;rsquo;s. Nature is Healing2023

Originating with the phrase “Nature is Healing” (which gained popularity as a hashtag during the global COVID-19 lockdown), this installation explores the way many different sites of human absence are heralded as ironic victories of nature’s resilience. Nuclear waste sites, de-militarized zones, forests studded with unexploded grenades, contested borders, military training grounds, and sites of extreme pollution; these locations provide the stage for shifting definitions sickness and health, safety and danger, isolation and abundance, and the complexity of finding the “silver lining” in catastrophe. 


This project focuses specifically on the Hanford Nuclear Reservation just outside Richland, Washington, which produced the plutonium for the bomb that was dropped on Nagasaki, and is now the costliest environmental cleanup in American history. It’s also a wildlife refuge and national park known for its elk populations, cottontail and jackrabbits, and highly prized sagebrush habitat. 


Leveraging the material and visual overlap between hospital settings and nuclear control rooms, the project unpacks the idea of “healing” through diagnostic x-rays about radiation poisoning, the bioremediation capacities of sunflowers as get-well balloons, protective yellow leaded “glass” over collages and a chunk of glass referencing&#38;nbsp; plans to use vitrification (a molten glass process) to store radioactive waste, neon-pink spray paint used to tag radioactive rabbits and tumbleweeds, and silver mylar emergency blankets.

As Above, So Below

This exhibition tells the story of MegaSkwrl, a big-foot-like alien Siberian flying squirrel that causes anarchy and chaos in an effort to encourage us to be open to the unknown in a world where the predicted consequences of climate-change can feel determined and unchangeable. Inspired by the Fortean Times (a journal of paranormal phenomena), the accompanying book (Uncertain Times) is comprised of fake articles, personal essays, quotes, and a series of collages that sample from 90’s back issues of the Fortean Times, video stills from the X-Files (1993), collages the artist made while in high school in the 90’s, illustrations of Annie Besant’s Thought-Forms: A Record of Clairvoyant Investigation, and video-stills and camera trap photos of MegaSkwrl taken in the Olympic National Forest. The legendary squirrel and the conspiracy theories around it provoke questions about the ways both liberal and conservative politics use nostalgia, distrust of the government and authority, and the allure of aliens, monsters, magic, new-age practices, appropriated Indigenous ideas, and the unknown to provide meaning in all-too certain times. 


This project is a dual exhibition with Kyle Adam Kalev Peets, made in conversation with one another throughout the process. Echoes in subject and material occur throughout. In contrast to Lux’s work looking to the stars, Peets’ work looks below, to imagine the world of rocks. Play and the suspension of disbelief are used to shift perspectives towards the more-than-human to destabilize hierarchical ways of looking at, then acting in the material world. Waiting for the Flood

Centering on quotes from Theodor Adorno’s brief essay Mammoth, from his Minima Moralia, this exhibition explores what it means to be “waiting for the flood”. . . anticipating and expecting the next climate-disaster, while trying to make meaning of that knowledge. Adorno suggests that familiarizing ourselves with the gigantic, perhaps the monstrous, is one way to prepare for the outsized horrors to come. And that our obsession with the persistence of extinct animals offers hope that something will outlive our mistakes. With this as a starting point, the comic-style drawings in this exhibition imagine extinct animals among us, perhaps as corporeal monsters, perhaps merely as ghosts. . . haunting the sites of their absence. Through the Biblical figure of Noah, the drawings engage with the widespread use of religious terminology in discussions about de-extinction (building upon previous work in Point of No Return). The drawing’s collage approach sources imagery from vintage horror comics, girl-scout calendars, movie stills, and infomercials for Armageddon prepper supplies to think about the cultural work that ideas about extinction and de-extinction are doing in our own preparation for the future.

Point of No Return2021
Building off the uncanny religious terminology used in de-extinction science or “resurrection biology”, and its futuristic technologies aimed at returning to the past, Point of No Return explores extinction narratives and the cultural work they are doing in the time of the 6th mass extinction.
The installation is accompanied by a book, Forward to the Past!, that includes an essay by Dr. Katharine Mershon and was published by Paper Machine. Copies of the accompanying book can be purchased at Paper Machine.Home-made reliquaries for extinct animals (wood, lights, house paint, plastic flowers, fake crystal, plastic cake toppers and religious knick-knacks, 3D printed skull, tree branch, plastic frog dissection model, vintage Kleenex box holder, glass taxidermy eyes, paper mache, decoy pigeon, pigeon spikes, wax); Drawings (colored pencil and xerox), carved faux granite, plastic flowers, plastic thylacine and tortoise, sympathy cards and cemetery wreaths, print-out of a poem by Margaret Atwood "Elegy for a Tortoise," wooden cut-outs of extinct animals, plastic water pistols, balloons and mylar

Famous Monsters2019
With a focus on the ‘endling’ – the last remaining individual of a nearly-extinct species – Famous Monsters draws attention to the romanticized ways we think about extinction. These charismatic and pathetic creatures are, in effect, the undead . . . tragic symbols of loneliness, never to find love, caught in the space between a once-thriving population and oblivion. Famous Monsters recasts well-known endlings as no longer passive, lovesick victims, but instead as zombie monsters who attack people in an outdoor recreation store, a cemetery, and a campsite in Tasmania. The story counters the dominant focus on heterosexual breeding relationships, as the zombies procreate through alternative means and go from lonely individuals to overwhelming masses, rivaling their former numbers.

Both the collection of study
skins (taxidermic preparations used in research rather than display), and the creation of large-scale habitat dioramas, can seem antiquated—a product
of empire-building and older attitudes about nature and conservation. In
other ways, the secrets held within longstanding collections, especially when
compared to recent data, can prove surprisingly valuable for contemporary
research. This installation offered the opportunity to work with my home institution’s scientific animal collection, which includes mounted
taxidermy specimens meant to look like they are alive as well as the study-skins or case specimens shown in this diorama. &#38;nbsp;Study skins are used for research
all over the world, but the skins in this display case are primarily used for teaching purposes.
Most of the animals were prepared by college students years ago as
part of their coursework. Many of the specimens were
collected locally, and indeed the background image would be recognizable to local viewers as a site just a few miles away. The accompanying placards and the miniature diorama box on the walls connect the local to distant stories of the value and complexity of collecting and maintaining animal specimens in natural history spaces.The larger installation was accompanied by a satellite piece at the Maxey Museum across campus. More playful and exploratory, this piece features a pile of sausage-like study skins stacked inside a traditional museum display case within the watchful eye of a plastic decoy hawk. &#38;nbsp;

Eat, Drink, and Be Merry
2016

The three parts of this project tell intertwining stories of vultures, fruit bats, and viruses connected by contemporary disease spillovers from animal hosts into humans. The installations view recent outbreaks of the Nipah and rabies viruses in Bangladesh and India through the historical and problematic golden ages of two European countries with global reach, combining symbolic Dutch and Victorian decorative arts with patterns derived from scientific knowledge. Both fruit bats and vultures emerge as complex actors within a global stage influenced by colonial power, trade, and unexpected interactions between humans and animals. 

Eat: Bamboo Chinoiserie table, Victoria cake with icing, animal cake toppers (cows and rabid dogs), Royal Standard bone china tea cups and saucers in “Indian Summer” pattern, plastic flowers, vase, bamboo perches with gold rope and tassels, custom-made wallpaper; Drink: brass chandelier with fruit-bat crystals, 17th century-Dutch-style table, Tyvek® table cloth laser-cut with diagrams of viruses and biohazard symbols, stemware with palm wine, hand-painted Delftware-style vases with plastic flowers, oil on canvas on panel with carved frame, digital print on canvas; Be Merry: Formica marble, blue tarp, 97 ABS vulture skulls, artificial grass.The installation was accompanied by a collection of writings by the artist (below).
