Language Aquisition Project

2010

This installation looks at the significance of names, verbs, and emotion in language research in non-human apes. Charcoal portraits of famous representative individuals from each of the four great ape species (not including humans) correspond with inkjet prints on the opposing wall demonstrating the kind of language research work done with that particular animal. The selections highlight the tension between these animals as scientific subjects, and as persons.

Charcoal on paper, inkjet prints of texts from animal language research, oil painting on paper of forest scene, yellow floor tape labeled "Narrow abyss of non-comprehension"
